Bowdoinham runs to about 34 square miles and roughly 3,142 people. It sits about 33 miles northeast of downtown Portland. That is roughly 1,370 housing units. The community dates back to 1762. We cover ZIP code 04008.
Our job history shows nothing in Bowdoinham so far. Plenty of sites will show you a number here anyway.
The typical home in Bowdoinham dates to around the mid-1980s. Houses of this vintage usually got batts or blown fiber at whatever the standard of the day was, which is well short of what is recommended now. Most are one top-up away from being right.
We work across Bowdoinham rather than one corner of it — Bowdoinham Village, Pork Point, Abagadasset Point, Brown's Point and Center's Point included. Construction and vintage change between them, sometimes by thirty years and a whole different framing method, which decides whether a wall can be dense-packed at all.
Bowdoinham lies on the west shore of Merrymeeting Bay, where several rivers meet, and is drained by the Cathance, Abagadasset, Muddy and Kennebec rivers. Its village grew at Cathance Landing on the Cathance River, where ships were built for about 144 years, from about 1768 to 1912.
The Census Bureau estimates 1,370 homes in Bowdoinham. 210 of them (15%) went up before 1940 — 40th of 64 places on this site for pre-1940 housing. The 1980s were the busiest decade, adding 350 of today's homes (26%); 38% predate 1980 and 23% were built in 2000 or later. For Sagadahoc County as a whole the pre-1940 share is 27%, so Bowdoinham sits below it.
Of 1,285 occupied homes, 0% heat with utility gas and 11% with electricity; another 11% burn propane or other tank gas. Electric heat here is as common as across the county (11%), and ranks 26th of 64 on this site. Efficiency Maine's insulation rebates do not depend on the fuel or the utility, but the fuel decides what the work saves, so the assessment asks how the house is heated.
94% of occupied homes are owner-occupied and 81% of all homes are single-family detached houses, with 185 mobile homes in the count. On a housing mix like this, the likely starting points are the attic, which is where most houses here start.

1,370 homes, Census ACS 2020–2024 (B25034, B25040, B25003); 1,285 occupied.
542 of Bowdoinham's 1,370 homes (40%) were built in the 1980s and 1990s. The gaps in houses of that age are the parts nobody sealed: batts stuffed into the rim joist, bare spots over cathedral and tray ceilings, soffit vents buried with no baffles, can lights punched through the ceiling plane. A top-up plus a day of sealing usually covers it.

Bowdoinham does not publish the energy code edition it enforces, so this page does not name one. Bowdoinham had 3,047 residents in 2020 and is not required to enforce the state code. Maine has one energy code for the whole state, the 2021 IECC with Maine's changes. A town of 4,000 or fewer people does not have to enforce it, but the state says it still applies to every building, and meeting it is the owner's responsibility.
There is no published answer for Bowdoinham. Neither the permit-required list nor the exemption list mentions insulation or air sealing at all. Bowdoinham's Code Enforcement page exempts maintenance, repair or replacement of part of a building that leaves the internal layout and the footprint unchanged; adding insulation is not named. That silence is not permission and it is not a prohibition. We settle it with a phone call before the crew is scheduled.
The published number is 207-666-5531. The department page is here.
Permitting is on us, not on you.
In Bowdoinham, 60% of occupied homes heat with fuel oil or kerosene, 11% with propane or other tank gas and 11% with electricity (Census ACS 2020–2024). The insulation money for a Bowdoinham house comes from Efficiency Maine, not the electric company. For a zone of 500 square feet or more it pays $2,000 at any income, $3,000 at moderate income and $4,000 at low income, and $150 to $300 more for attic air sealing. Only a Residential Registered Vendor can do rebated work, the claim goes in within six months, and a lifetime limit of $8,600 per home applies. Income-qualified households in Sagadahoc County can apply to Kennebec Valley Community Action Program (207-859-1500) for free weatherization through MaineHousing instead. The Sagadahoc County page and the rebate guide carry the full rules.

Maine sets the residential energy code statewide, so the attic figure is R-60 wherever it is published here; what changes is the permit desk, and none of the 7 publishes a permit rule for insulation.
